Baby Shower Planning Made Simple

Hosting a baby shower is truly an honor for the friend, family member or coworker responsible, although it can be an intimidating task for the first-timer! Use these planning tips and guidelines to pull off a memorable shower with as little stress as possible.

A small notebook is a worthwhile investment to help you keep track of your guest list, vendor list, expenses and ideas. Keep these things in mind as you plan the perfect shower:

Theme

Setting a theme helps you to plan the other aspects of the shower, such as food, invitations, games and decorations. Choose a theme that suits the expectant mother's tastes and your budget. Try one of these popular baby shower themes:

  • Backyard barbecue
  • Special Delivery from the Stork
  • ABC's and 123's
  • Diaper Party

Budget

Typically, the hostess of the party foots the bill for the entire shower. If other friends or family members wish to contribute, a more elaborate shower may become an option. Decide how much you have to spend before moving forward with your planning and keep track of all expenses to keep from going over budget.

Guests

Who will you invite to the shower? A gathering of close personal friends will be a more intimate, relaxed event than one including extended family, neighbors or coworkers. Remember that you will need to have enough room in your budget to provide food, favors and invitations for each guest and plan your guest list accordingly.

Venue

The venue you choose for the shower often goes hand in hand with the theme you have selected. A Garden Tea Party shower might be held in a popular local garden or park, while a formal dinner or cocktail party would be better suited to a large home or banquet hall. The simplest family and friends showers are usually held in the hostesses home.

Invitations

Invitations are often dictated by the theme, as well. A formal, upscale shower calls for professionally printed invitations, while a casual shower might require only a phone call to each of the guests. Some hostesses choose to print their own invitations on their home computer, while others prefer the classic handwritten invitation. Whatever you decide, be sure to prepare and send your invitations at least 2 weeks in advance, giving your guests time to send back an RSVP.

Decorations

Your decorative choices will help set the mood for the event. Balloons and crepe paper ribbon are traditional choices for a home party, while more formal showers are set off by floral arrangements, linens and candles. Every aspect of the party should work well with your decorations; choose tableware, napkins, the cake, foods and favors to match your decorative color scheme.

Favors

Sending guests home with a small favor is a great way to show your appreciation for their participating in the shower. It needn't be expensive, but choose a meaningful token such as a personalized gift bag or framed copy of the invitation.

Food

Whether you choose to host a sit-down dinner or opt to serve finger foods, be sure to have enough on hand to serve extra guests should you have surprise visitors! Choose plates, flatware, napkins and linens to suit the theme and formality of the event.

With all of your choices recorded in your notebook, you will easily be able to keep track of every detail of your shower planning. Don't be afraid to delegate tasks to other close friends or relatives of the expectant mother if you need help. Have each detail settled before sending invitations and purchase your supplies a week before the shower in case you have to make a substitution.
