Career Guide After Graduation

Transitioning out of college can be both, an exciting as well as a scary experience. There are newer and tougher challenges to face, unwritten laws to be followed, unexplored opportunities for progress – and humiliation – in every nook and cranny. While recent graduates and most other college students are preparing themselves to become experts in their respective fields, very few are adequately prepared to succeed in the day-to-day situations that they might encounter.

This situation can be especially tedious for all those who are in need of financial assistance to continue with their college education, which takes almost 3-4 years to complete. As a result, more and more high school graduates are taking up jobs of lesser value and importance. Nevertheless, there are many schools and colleges that act as career guides for their students and help them choose suitable career paths to succeed after graduation.

However, there are a large number of employment opportunities for graduates over the Internet with a list of the job profile and work location. There are loads of specialized as well as general search engines to customize your job search. Both businesses as well as government agencies post jobs online. So, if you’ve graduated recently, here is how to go about looking for employment:

Never be too concerned about the classifieds in the papers. Even though you may find an opportunity that matches your qualifications, the job vacancies there represent only a tiny percentage of the jobs that are available in the market. However, in order to find a suitable employer, you must prepare your resume or even post it online.

When hunting for a job, one of the most important things to do is prepare your resume. The resume is what your hiring manager will look at and will then check to see if your qualifications and experience fits the job description. When preparing your resume, always make sure you highlight the most important parts of your past experience. There are 3 very important factors to take into consideration when preparing your resume:

  • Always lay emphasis on your strengths.
  • Be very specific
  • Tailor your resume according to the job posting.

Another thing to keep in mind, when writing a cover letter make sure you emphasize all your skills and past experiences or even your biggest career successes. Your cover letter will always reflect your personality. You want your cover letter to show that you are not just looking for any job; you are looking for that job in particular. Make sure there are no punctuation errors and spelling mistakes. This does not give out a really good impression. Be concise and use simple words. Outline your interests, skills and abilities in a bulleted format.

Lastly, it’s always best to send a thank you note. The chances of you making a favorable impression are higher. According to surveys, almost 80% employers like to receive thank you notes after interviews, but only 40% of the candidates write them. Your thank you note should not be too long or fancy. A simple typed or even handwritten message on a plain white sheet of paper will be enough. Always thank the interviewer for taking the time out to interview you, and offer to provide any extra material that he may require. It is wise to say that you are looking forward to working in the company and that you enjoyed meeting him.

So, now that you have graduated, keep these tips in mind when you’re out looking for a job.
