Party for Valedictorians and Summa Cum Laude Graduates

Graduating from high school or college is a huge achievement, but if your student is graduating with honors then that achievement is even more deserving of a special celebration. No ordinary graduation is going to be sufficient.

Background on Graduation Honors

If you’re not familiar with all of the “honors” terminology, then you may not realize just how special the accomplishment is for your student. In most high schools, the title of valedictorian is conferred on the student who has the highest grade point average among his or her entire graduating class. The word “valedictorian” actually comes from a Latin phrase – vale dicere which means “to say farewell.” The term is used because the valedictorian is usually asked to give the final speech during the graduation ceremony.

Colleges also give honors to top graduates. One of the top honors in most universities is to graduate summa cum laude which is Latin for “with highest praise.” Different schools have different selection criteria, but these students are always some of the best and brightest. In fact, graduating summa cum laude at some schools means maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA during your entire education.

Throwing a Fantastic Party for a Fantastic Student

When your student has truly gone above and beyond the average effort of most students, then they deserve a special party. That either means you can throw a huge party and invite nearly everyone the student has ever known or you can put together a more intimate celebration, perhaps at a very expensive restaurant.

If you choose to have a huge party, then you’ll definitely want to start with a theme. Sure, there are plenty of ideas to choose from, but one idea might be to play up their high honors. You can start with Blue Ribbon or Perfect Finish invitations, for example.

Decorate the party location with the number 1 to signify the student’s top scholastic position. You can also use other traditional graduation decorations, such as mortar boards and tassels. Another good idea is to match the color scheme of your party with the school colors of your student’s alma mater.

Make sure to have plenty of champagne (non-alcoholic for underage guests, of course) so you can toast the guest of honor’s accomplishments. Another good idea is to have a graduation cake created. You could top it with the school logo or mascot, the school colors, or even a photo of your student beginning her or his school career.

The important thing is to create a party that is going to be as memorable for them as their accomplishment is for you.
