Choosing the Right Personal Christmas Card

Choosing Christmas CardsYour Christmas card says a lot about both your personality and your sentiments about the holiday season, so it’s important to put some thought into your choice of holiday card(s). There are two basic approaches to choosing this important greeting:

  • Choose one card style to send to everyone on your list
  • Choose cards specifically for the recipients

Most of us choose one card style to send to everyone on our list. This is the simplest and least expensive way to go. When selecting your card, be sure to pick something that represents your overall personality and message for the holidays. You can choose a funny card, a card that is sentimental or one that is religious in nature. Many people choose one that reflects the area of the country in which they live. People who live on the coast might choose a card with a beach scene, while those who live where it’s very cold, might choose one with a snowy scene.

Many people choose to write a holiday letter to their friends and family at Christmas. Typically, the letter highlights important family events from the year, keeping your loved ones updated. These letters can be really nice to receive; just avoid writing something that reads like a yearly list of family boasts. There are dozens of jokes out there about the boring Christmas letter, so evaluate yours carefully so that you’re sure it’s entertaining. If you’re thinking of sending this type of letter, be sure to proofread carefully. You don’t want to be embarrassed by a letter full of typographical errors. Plus, you might want to enclose a family photo with your holiday letter.

It’s also important to choose good quality stationery for your holiday letter. Visit a website or retail stationery store to choose beautiful paper for your letter. The website or stationery store may be able to print the letter for you, as well.

If you decide to purchase a different card for each recipient (or group of recipients) on your list, you’ll have a lot of freedom to pick a card perfectly suited to each audience. This can be a lot of fun because you can make your messages very personal, reminding special people on your list about times you’ve shared together, or of the nature of your relationship. Specially chosen cards are particularly effective for your significant other, parents and special friends. One-of-a-kind cards are more expensive than boxed cards, but they allow you to create a special message for each recipient.

The greeting card market is varied enough that you’ll have no trouble finding a card for every special relationship in your life, from a spouse to your favorite co-worker or neighbor. Many people choose a combination of the two styles; choosing boxed cards for most of the recipients on their Christmas card list, with a few very personalized cards for a select few people in their lives.

Regardless of the style you choose, be sure to include a personal message in each card. It can be very disappointing to receive a Christmas card that simply reads “Happy Holidays, The Johnsons”. A simple note of greeting takes very little time and can make your card far more enjoyable to receive.
