The Holiday Season is a time that always brings people closer together. Starting with the bustle of Thanksgiving and stretching to the fireworks that festively announce the New Year, there is a whole season of good cheer and warm feelings. Naturally we usually think first of our families and friends. But the holidays provide the perfect opportunity to develop a closer relationship with other people in life as well – your customers.
As the busy rush of pre-Christmas business settles over you, do not overlook your valued customers. Spending the time to remind your customers that you sincerely value their business will be very rewarding for your company. You are likely to retain many customers who may have been new to you that year, and you will build even deeper ties with your longtime customers. Customers can always sense when they are appreciated and have a high priority in a company’s outlook, and this is a perfect way to build loyalty.
When you show your customers that you care, you have to really show it! An impersonal set of pre-printed cards and envelopes that say nothing more than “Season’s Greetings” are not going to cut it. If your cards look like nothing but advertising, they may get tossed with the other junk mail. Of course, as you finish up your fourth quarter in the business year you will no doubt have a close eye on your company’s budget, but do purchase the best quality cards that fit within that tight budget.
Remember that even a very small personal touch on your greeting cards will be noticed and appreciated! Everyone enjoys receiving Christmas cards during the holidays, but no one ever enjoys getting junk mail. Make your cards genuine Christmas greeting cards instead of impersonal advertisement.
It might seem inefficient, but addresses that are hand-written on envelopes rather than pre-printed have a much greater chance of being kept and opened. Inside the card if you can put any information specific to that customer – mention of a particular transaction or project, perhaps – it will go a long way toward making them feel that their business is noticed and appreciated. Clearly this makes up for the seeming “inefficiency” of spending careful time on your cards.
If you have any concern that some of your valued customers don’t celebrate Christmas, don’t let that stop you from sending out a card. If you want to be extra sensitive, there are plenty of excellent winter greeting cards that are more general, with messages about a happy holiday season or best wishes for the New Year.
Speaking of the New Year, it’s a great idea to mention the coming year in your Christmas greeting cards. Cheerfully remind your customers that 2010 will be a great time to do business and that you look forward to a continued relationship. As you surely already know, building customer loyalty will have long term benefits for you and your customers. Spend some time this season developing these important relationships, and you are certain to have a happy and successful 2010.
