Why are Red and Green Used on Christmas Cards?

The colors red and green are often referred to as Christmas colors. We all thoroughly enjoy these colors but you may find yourself wondering, how did these colors become synonymous with Christmas? At Christmas time especially, many spots will be filled with the color red to show their festiveness. Even Santa Clause wears red with his extremely popular costume. Almost all Christmas decorations will have some red in them too.

The combinations of the two colors are a huge part of this annual celebration. Holly consists of red berries and green leaves, symbolizing both life and blood. The color red became more popular when Coca-Cola made commercials late last century showing Santa sporting a red suit matching the very popular can of soda. This was a huge seller for the holiday itself, and of course the can of pop, too.

It’s quite difficult to associate these two colors with anything other than Christmas. Those two colors are here to stay. The tradition of involving these two colors goes back for many generations and will be here for many generations to come.

When you look at the Christmas card you plan on sending, you may want to make sure that the card incorporates those two colors. It shows that you are festive, in good spirits, and that you believe in Jesus Christ. He’s the whole reason that we celebrate Christmas in the first place, so why not let the whole world know. Christmas time is a time to celebrate the sacrifice that Jesus Christ gave for us all.
