Most of us remember the lyrics to the old Christmas carol: “We three kings of orient are, / bearing gifts we traverse afar / Field and fountain, / moor and mountain, / following yonder star.” The words are a reference to the Biblical Three Kings who traveled to the birth place of Jesus to give him gifts and to welcome him into the world. The song “We Three Kings of Orient Are” has been sung for decades as a reminder of this story and its significance around the holiday season.
Because of the significance of these individuals, they are a great choice as symbols for your annual Christmas cards or holiday party invitations. Plus, learning more about their story can be a great source of conversation during the season.
According to the Bible, the Three Kings traveled from the east to the birth place of baby Jesus. They most likely originated in Ancient Persia and may have been Zoroastrian priests who knew a great deal about astrology. To reach the location, they were said to have followed a star known now as the Star of Bethlehem. Although most people speak of there being “three kings,” the Bible never states how many individuals were traveling in the group. It is believed to be three because three symbolic gifts were bestowed upon Jesus: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Obviously, gold was incredibly valuable and a wise gift to someone who was destined to be King of the Jews. What about the other two gifts? Frankincense is a type of resin from certain trees. It has a strong, pleasant aroma and was often burned during ceremonies at the temples. Myrrh was similarly aromatic but was the most valuable of the gifts at the time. Myrrh is said to have been worth five times more than frankincense and was more valuable than even gold.
At one point, during the Three Kings’ journey, King Herod attempted to trick them into revealing the whereabouts of the newborn Jesus. Obviously, the king’s attempt failed.
You’ll find a number of choices if you want to incorporate this Biblical story into your holiday stationery. The Arrival of the Kings or the Traveling Kings would be ideal cards to send to your Christian family and friends for the holidays. However, if you want something a little more elegant, you may want to choose the Three Wisemen on Camels cards with their matching gold-lined envelopes. You can also purchase Three Kings letterhead if you want to send thank you cards or handwritten messages during the Christmas season.
