Don’t Make These Thank You Card Mistakes
Thank you cards are a wonderful way for us to show our appreciation to others, particularly others who have done something very kind for us. However, creating these thank you cards also means following certain rules of etiquette. You don’t want to ruin the experience by making an error.
Let’s look at some of the most preventable mistakes you can make when writing thank you cards.
Butterfly Thank You Cards
Some thank you cards are more appropriate for some audiences than others. Thank you cards decorated with butterflies, such as Joyful Butterflies, Red Butterfly Die-Cut, Butterfly, or Butterfly Folded thank you cards, could be insulting when sent from a man to a woman. The connotation of the card’s symbol may not be interpreted as innocently as the sender intended. However, these cards are ideal for women to send to women.
These cards are just one example. You also wouldn’t want to send any thank you cards with hearts or other love symbols from a woman to a man who she is involved with romantically, particularly if she is married or in a serious relationship. The only exception might be wedding thank you cards IF they are addressed to the couple.
Other Common Thank You Card Errors
Besides choosing the right thank you cards, you also need to double-check your accuracy. Spelling the recipients’ names wrong, leaving off their family members, or thanking them for the wrong gift/favor could all be disastrous. The best way to prevent these problems is by taking good notes in advance. For example, at a baby shower you would want to designate a person to keep track of who gave which gift. You could also make a note of what was given on the back of the cards accompanying the gifts. If you’re ever in doubt about the spelling of names, check with someone who can give you the information. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
You also don’t want to wait too long. General etiquette rules give you up to a year but – let’s be honest – if you don’t send those thank you cards within the first few weeks they won’t get sent. A better rule is to get those thank you cards written and in the mail within two weeks.
Finally, a verbal or emailed thank you is no substitute for a thank you card. Sure, it’s nice to say thank you in these ways, but you shouldn’t use them as a substitute for a more formal show of appreciation.
