When we think of garden parties, we usually think of blooming flowers. However, one of the most beautiful spectacles of blooming plant life has to be the delicate cherry blossom tree. The trees, known as sakura in Japan, come in several different colors. The most impressive is the Somei Yoshino with its pink-tinged white flowers. Because of its beauty and its symbolism, the cherry blossom could be an ideal centerpiece for your celebration. However, you may want to learn a little more about the tree before choosing it for your theme. The History of the Cherry BlossomCherry blossom trees come from the East, particularly India, China, and Japan. Long ago, noble families in some of these countries made it a practice to watch their own cherry blossom trees as they blossomed at the start of the short season. The first known “flower viewing” was held in Kyoto in 812. Today, these viewings are popular and common in Japan. For weeks, the weather forecasters in the country keep the citizens informed about when the blooming is expected. Then they arrive in parks and other locations with their families to witness the beauty firsthand. Perhaps because of their long history in Asia, cherry blossom trees have taken on great symbolism. The trees, which only bloom for a short but spectacular time, have come to stand for the quick passage of human life. A recent Japanese anime called Five Centimeters Per Second is named for how fast a cherry blossom flower falls to the ground – this act is symbolic of how quickly human relationships change and how fleeting love can be. Cherry blossoms are also closely connected to the samurai. Each fallen blossom could represent the sacrificed life of a fallen hero. While cherry blossoms have deep meanings in the East, they may best be thought of here as a symbol of friendship. Our most famous trees were gifts from Japan in 1912 and again in 1965. Although not as common as they are in Asia, cherry blossoms have become a lovely sight during spring even in the United States. Cherry Blossoms as Your Party ThemeUnless you have your own cherry blossom trees available, then using real ones as part of your decorations can be difficult. Instead, you may be better off using cherry blossom images, such as photographs or paintings. If you have some of the fallen petals, you could sprinkle them on tables like confetti but remember they won’t look good for long. Cherry blossoms also make an excellent accompaniment to any Asian-themed party, including wedding receptions. If you do decide to use cherry blossoms in your next party, then consider starting with some appropriately themed invitations, such as Blossom Style invitations or Cherry Blossom invitations. |
