Celebrate the 4th of July by having a party!

4th of July

Invitations

If you are hosting a daytime 4th of July party, look for stationary that has a flag on it. If your party will be an evening party and include fireworks, look for stationery that has “bursts” of fireworks on it. Be sure to indicate the nature of the activities when inviting people, and request that they wear red, white and blue clothing. Invite a mix of people of all ages, for a successful party. If you know people who have served in the armed forces, send them guest of honor invitations, and let them know that you would be honored if they would allow you to thank them for the years spent protecting the freedom of the country.

Decorating

Inviting guests to celebrate Independence Day (4th of July) with you is a very easy way to host a gathering. Because it is a Patriotic Holiday, it is very easy to put decorate the indoors, a patio, or a picnic area for the party. Red, White and Blue are the colors to use; Stars and Stripes are the shapes to use! Tablecloths, paper products and balloons make an instant party and are readily available in any party or department store. Centerpieces can be made by putting tall sparklers into a vase and sprinkling star shaped metallic confetti around the base. Flags of all sizes should be displayed throughout the space. Consider purchasing buttons or “Uncle Sam” hats for each of your invited guests.

Activities

You do not need to invite people to your home to host a 4th of July event. Why not consider inviting friends to observe Independence Day with you by attending a parade or a re-enactment? Some people spend the day at the lake, swimming. Adults and children alike enjoy playing volleyball and flying Frisbees at the beach or in a backyard. Another favorite activity is to enjoy the pastime of making homemade ice cream. If you do not have access to an ice cream maker, there are several internet sites that will give you directions on how to make ice cream in a coffee can or sandwich bag. If you are hosting an evening activity, you could provide fireworks (check your local laws) or go together to observe fireworks that are symbolic of “the rocket’s red glare”. Regardless of how you choose to commemorate the freedom that you have, be sure that you take the time to publicly thank any of your invited guests who may have served in the military.

Food

Traditional 4th of July food includes watermelon, cakes decorated as flags, and red/blue jello with Cool Whip topping. Chips, vegetable platters and a variety of dips are great snacks for in-between meals. Picnics are a popular meal theme, as are Barbecue’s. Southern Fried Chicken, hotdogs and hamburgers are all popular items, as are salads of all types. In some parts of the country, having the first potatoes and peas of the season has become a tradition. Provide red punch and other drinks in themed glasses.
