The Simple Way to Enjoy the Season

Picnic Party IdeasIf you’d like to give a party but don’t want all the fuss of cooking, house cleaning, and planning activities, throw an impromptu picnic party. This is a great party if you have children and have lots of friends with children. And, I’m going to show you how to do it, so that it’s no fuss and takes very little time. Here are five simple steps for a great picnic party.

  1. Choose a park in your area. The critical elements for your park are a good playground and covered picnic shelters that can be reserved, preferably with electrical outlets.
  2. Make out your guest list and reserve the appropriate number of picnic tables to accommodate your group. Try to reserve tables near the playground so that children can play within sight of their parents.
  3. Plan a menu, but keep it general. Then plan to ask each of your guests to contribute a dish. For example, ask two guests to contribute a dessert, two to contribute salads and two to contribute sandwich fixings. Making the menu requests general allows guests to be creative by bringing some of their signature dishes.

An alternative to this menu idea is to simply organize the date and location and have each family bring its own food. This may prove simpler for families who have children who are very picky eaters. Personally, I like to bring food and share, but do whatever works for your circle of friends.

  1. Choose invitations from MyExpression.com. They offer a wide variety of summertime invitations which will be perfect. The “Watermelon Slices” invitation is my favorite for this party. Include details about the park you’ll be using, as well as menu requests. If your park has special activities, such as a lake with paddle boats, include information about these. You might be able to get a flyer from the park describing activities and costs.
  2. On the day of the event, pack up your family, your food and perhaps some extra lawn chairs. Head out to the facility and spend a warm summer day enjoying the park and the company.

See how simple this party can be? One of the reasons, in my opinion, that people don’t gather and socialize as often as they would like is that nobody wants to take the responsibility to plan and execute a party. We worry that we don’t have enough time, our budget is too tight, or we’ll never get the house cleaned in time. This party removes all of those worries. It’s inexpensive, the duties are spread out among all the guests and you don’t even have to clean your house! If there’s a rental fee on the picnic tables (many parks don’t charge a fee) you can ask for contributions or rotate who organizes the party and pays the fee.

This is one of my favorite parties of the year. My children so look forward to lunch and an afternoon at the park with their friends. It’s stress free and parents get to enjoy an afternoon at the park with their friends, too. Plan this party with your friends. I guarantee you’ll want to make it a yearly event.
