Host a Retirement Party
Who to inviteIf the person has worked at several companies, invite former coworkers and supervisors from them all. Unless the retiree has stayed in the same geographical area for a long period of time, it may be time consuming to track down people and get addresses to send out the invitations. Most people expect a retirement party, just as they expect baby and wedding showers; therefore it is unlikely that you will be planning a surprise party. The retiree does not need to be included in the planning. The content of the party can remain a surprise, however it is appropriate that you ask the retiree for an address book or contact list. That is all they need to know! Direct contact with companies may yield some results, as will doing internet searches. InvitationsIf you are planning a black tie affair for an executive, it is appropriate to send formal invitations. If the retirement party is less formal, choose an invitation that expresses the occupation of the retiree. A retiring firefighter, for example, will appreciate the recognition for the years of their hard work. Be sure to let the invited guests know that they are considered to have been a significant part of the life of the retiree, and it would be an honor to have them in attendance. Ask for RSVP’s, to assist you in planning for adequate seating, food, and drink. DécorYou can build the décor around the occupation(s) of the retiree, in similar fashion to planning any other party. To continue using the example of a firefighter, you could obtain photos of the firefighter in dress uniform, in bunker gear, and civilian clothes and display them (enlarged) around the room. Be sure to also display any photos available of fires that have been fought, kittens saved, and parades the person has been honored in. Large cakes can be made in the shape of a fire truck. Centerpieces can easily be created with the retiree’s fireman’s helmet and other equipment items. ThemeRegardless of whether you opt for a cocktail party, coffee and dessert, or a complete meal; the theme should be to pay tribute to the retiree. When you send the invitations out, include stationary for each invited guest to write a short tribute on. Ask that they bring it with them to the party, or send the completed tribute back if they are unable to attend. Some people will not want to stand in front of people at a microphone and read the tribute. As guests arrive to the party, ask them if they are willing to read theirs. If not, collect them and insert them into prepared keepsake binder (3 ring with sheet protectors). Have the MC read some of these from the binder after others have finished speaking. End the time by inviting any who did not prepare something in writing to speak impromptu, as a means of paying tribute to the retiree. |
