Saying Thanks with a Casual Thank You Card

One of the biggest misconceptions people have about thank you cards is that they have to be very formal and stuffy.  This idea may come from the types of thank you cards people were forced to write when they were young.  However, that’s not always the case.

Knowing When to Say “Thanks” not “Thank You”

While casual thank you cards are sometimes acceptable, you have to know when they are appropriate. For example, if you just completed a job interview, you would never send the interviewer a casual thank you card. You are trying to make a good impression while also expressing your gratitude so you need to choose formal cards and write a fairly formal note inside.

Casual thank you cards typically work best with people you know well. Sending casual thank you cards to friends and family members who purchased birthday presents would be fine. Do keep in mind that casual thank you cards can also be used for weddings but only if you had a casual wedding. Like all of your wedding stationery, your thank you cards should match the tone of your celebration.

Less formal thank you cards are also a good choice when you are trying to establish a relationship. For example, if you just sold a customer a new car, then a casual “thanks” card may mean more to them then a formal note. Taking the casual approach makes it seem as if the two of you are already good friends and people are more likely to do business with someone they view as a friend.

Ideas for Casual Thank You Cards

If you’ll be having an occasion where casual thank you cards would be appropriate, then you’re in luck because plenty of such choices are available.

One thing that often sets casual thank you cards apart from more formal ones is their colorfulness. The Color Blocks or Dots thank you cards, for example, are both covered in bright colors. The Balloon thank you cards, on the other hand, stick to only a few colors but those colors are very vivid and bold.

Regardless of the style of thank you card you choose, make sure to include a sincere handwritten message inside. Even if you’re just saying “thanks,” you should include specifically what you are grateful for. You don’t have to use the same formal language you would with other types of thank you cards but personalizing the message is always important.
