When to host a Sports Theme Party

ESPN and other networks broadcast sports around the clock, providing ample opportunity to pick an event and invite people over for a party. Any Sunday afternoon will do!

You could invite a few friends to view a specific event, such as the Daytona 500 or the Super Bowl or the World Cup.

Another option is to do a specific sports theme for a person’s birthday or graduation, highlighting a particular sport that s/he plays or watches.

Consider using golf as the theme for a retiring executive.

All Sports Theme

An option to a single sport being highlighted is to host an all-sports party. This party would be an appropriate choice for athletes who enjoy all types of sports. Consider soccer, basketball and baseball as three that can be combined. Invite enough people to form teams and play in the tri-sport event. Purchase inexpensive plastic trophies or medals or print certificates to be given to winning teams. Although it is ideal to play the sports outside or in a large indoor gym, it is possible to adapt the events to a living room (think of Nerf basketball, for example).

Décor

Stationery suppliers, party supply stores and others offer ample choices for decorations for a multitude of sports and individual teams. The decorating for a sports theme party is as simple as deciding what your budget is and then shopping. Setup is also very simple, as you hang die cuts, use life size replicas of players or drivers, use color themed tablecloths, paper products, crepe paper and balloons.

Party Favors

If you are going to use a piñata at your gathering, find a themed one (or make one) and break it open early on, to reveal themed party favors. Themed party favors can be purchased for a low cost and will provide hours of entertainment throughout the party. If you are not doing a piñata, hand out different party favors periodically throughout the party. For example, if you are hosting a NASCAR party, purchase balloon racers. Your guests can compete with one another during the commercials!

Food

There is no particular etiquette for providing food at a Sports Theme Party. You can provide simple snacks like chips and dip or finger foods such as barbecue wings and ribs. If the purpose to gather to watch the event on television, remember that your guests will ant to have their food and drinks in the room with them. You can pre-cook food so that you do not have to miss the game. Just set all of the food out and invite guests to help themselves throughout the party! If you are hosting a birthday or graduation party, you may choose to have a sit down meal together.

Drinks

Be sure to have the refrigerator or cooler chests full of drinks for your guests. If you get individual bottles and cans, you will eliminate the need for drinking glasses. Provide a lined trashcan for guests to place drink containers in. Sports drinks are a great idea for this type of party!
