With an interest in Asian culture growing in this country and more couples looking for ways to celebrate their own or others’ cultures in their ceremony, traditional elements of Chinese weddings have become increasingly popular additions to modern ceremonies. Let’s look at a few ways to add some of these traditions.
While white is a traditional wedding color in the West, red serves the same purpose in China. Brides even wear red dresses. To add in a little of that traditional color, why not choose red wedding invitations. You’ll find a number of styles available, including choices that would be nice for semiformal or casual weddings. If you’re looking for invitations that would seem a little more formal, then the Signature Pocket or Celebration Jacket invitations might be a good choice.
Another idea for your wedding invitations is to make them bilingual. Write out what you want the invitation to say, then have it translated into Chinese and written on your invitation by a Chinese calligrapher.
If you don’t want to have then entire invitation in two languages, then why not choose one or two Chinese symbols – possibly for love or fortune – and have those added to your wedding invitations.
The date and time of a wedding in China is not chosen randomly. Couples carefully select the appropriate date based on the lunar calendar and on their ideas of which days are good for marriage. Check around in your area to see if you can find a Chinese Almanac or a Chinese astrologer in your area or online that can help you determine a good wedding date. For the time of your wedding, you’ll want to begin the ceremony on the half-hour (not the hour) so you’ll be starting your life together when the hands on the clock are moving up instead of down.
If you want to stick to traditions closely, then your actual wedding ceremony should not be a huge affair. Only the couples’ immediate family should be present. The big guest list is for the reception that follows.
Some elements of the reception will be familiar, such as cutting the cake. One difference is that Chinese wedding cakes include more layers than Western ones. For them, the layers form a ladder that represents how the couple will have to climb their way to a successful marriage. Entertainment is provided. Multi-course formal meals can also be served at some receptions.
Of course, there are plenty of other elements to a Chinese wedding. If you’re serious about having one, then do some additional research and decide which elements you want to include in your own celebration.
