If you're creating your own invitations or if you simply want to save money at the printers, you can create your own unique embellishments for your wedding invitations. Even if you've never been in a crafts store before or tried to do any kind of art project in the past, you can complete lovely do-it-yourself embellishments affordably and beautifully.
One of the easiest do-it-yourself embellishments are adhesive designs. These designs come in a number of styles, including a double heart to symbolize your marriage. You simply attach the designs to the invitations wherever you want it. It's very simple but it adds a touch of uniqueness to your invitations.
Another idea is to purchase a hole puncher – possibly one that makes designs, such as a heart-shape, in the paper. Punch a small hole in the upper corner of the invitation, then run a length of satin ribbon – you choose the color – through the hole. If you don't want to use ribbon, you can purchase string then decorate it with beads in your wedding colors, tie off the end, and you have a lovely, one-of-a-kind addition to your invitation.
If you like the idea of using ribbon, you could make three hole punches along the edge of the invitation, each an equal distance from one another, then weave the ribbon through the holes. This works very nicely, especially if your ribbon is not too narrow or too wide.
Some couples love the idea of surprising their guests with something special when they open the invitation, such as confetti. While you can purchase confetti, you can also make your own. Buy either a regular hole-puncher or, preferably, a shape-making hole-puncher and sheets of paper. For the paper, you should choose something shiny, perhaps gold, silver, or metallic primary colors. Fill a large bowl with the confetti, then toss in a little before you close the outer envelope. Be careful not to use too much or your guests will have a mess to clean up after reading your invitation.
If you started planning early and love the idea of using flowers as an embellishment, you can even press your own flowers. All you really need are some thick books.Purchase very fresh flowers, make sure they have no moisture on them, then place them between two sheets of paper and between the pages of the book. Pressing usually takes two to three weeks so you'll need to start planning ahead, especially if you'll be pressing a lot of flowers.
Another idea is to purchase translucent overlays. On the overlays, print the wording for your invitations (you could also hire a calligrapher to create a master copy which could be photocopied for the rest of your invitations – an inexpensive way to create the hand-written effect) then attach the overlay to the heavy card stock paper using wide, sheer ribbon and just a small amount of glue. If you don't like the idea of using ribbon, you could purchase charms and use those instead.
Just remember if you're creating or adding your own embellishments to the invitations, leave yourself plenty of time. Even though the suggestions above seem easy, they do take time. Also, plan ahead for mistakes – it sometimes takes a couple of tries to get the exact look you want.
