Foil lined envelopes are sometimes popular with couples choosing their wedding invitations because they look more elegant and expensive than plain paper envelopes. However, you need to use caution when choosing foil lined envelopes for your wedding invitations because the look simply doesn’t work consistently.
If you’re having a Christmas wedding, foil lined envelopes can be a great match. Because these types of envelopes are frequently used with Christmas cards anyway, the look works quite well. Blue envelopes with silver foil look very beautiful as do green or red envelopes with gold foil. They help you capture the feeling of Christmas and the theme of your wedding.
Not all wedding invitations are sent out to celebrate a new marriage either. Some couples who have been married a long time enjoy celebrating their anniversary by renewing their vows. This is most frequently done on the 25th and 50th anniversaries. In both cases, you could use foil lined envelopes to accentuate the anniversary theme. For example, your 25th anniversary envelopes could be silver or gray foil lined envelopes while your 50th anniversary envelopes are yellow or gold foil lined envelopes. You could even use these envelopes to send out invitations to anniversary parties as well.
Beyond these ideas, you need to carefully evaluate whether or not foil lined envelopes are going to work with your invitation/wedding colors and with the tone of your invitations. Foil lined envelopes don’t come in a rainbow of colors. Instead, they are usually limited to very dark, rich colors such as blue, mocha, or black. If dark colors aren’t being used in any other part of your wedding, then you wouldn’t want to use them for your invitation envelopes.
These dark colors are most commonly associated with colder weather hence the reason foil lined envelopes are an excellent choice for Christmas wedding invitations. That means if you are having a spring or summer wedding, foil-lined envelopes just don’t seem to match your needs as well. You’d be better off choosing something lighter and brighter for those invitations.
Foil lined envelopes also don’t match well with informal wedding invitations either. Because they are a more elegant choice, you would probably be better off using them for semi-formal or more formal invitations. Remember your invitations need to closely match the tone of your wedding. If you send out very fancy, elegant invitations for a casual beach wedding, you’ll be sending your guests mixed messages.
Although we’ve talked about many times when you shouldn’t use foil lined envelopes, that doesn’t mean you should never consider them an option. They are beautiful embellishments for some invitations, particularly if your invitations incorporate similar materials and the same color pattern. If you’re having a cold weather wedding or a more formal evening marriage, foil lined envelopes can be a beautiful addition, too.
Overall, as with any other aspect of your wedding, you need to carefully decide what will work best for your needs. You may have your heart set on foil lined envelopes, but if they don’t match your wedding colors or theme you may want to consider an alternative.
