Choosing a Professional Graphic Designer

Choosing a Professional Graphic Designer for Your Wedding InvitationsCouples who want something truly unique for their wedding invitations may want to consider enlisting the assistance of a graphic designer. However, before you reach that point, you need to understand how to choose that graphic designer. Like most of the vendors you choose for your wedding, you'll want to carefully weigh your options and look for a real professional who is going to meet your needs.

What to Look for in a Graphic Designer

First, you need to look at the graphic designer's portfolio. Look specifically for wedding invitation examples. Because invitations require special attention and a different approach than other types of commercial graphic design, you want to be sure the designer has worked on them before. Remember being able to design a web site is not the same as being able to design your invitation.

You're also going to be looking at the samples to determine if you like the work the designer has done. Design is very subjective. What someone may love, someone else may loath. You want to choose a designer whose work you really like because that means you'll be more likely to be happy with the results he or she creates for you.

Is Your Graphic Designer a Professional?

Second, you need to evaluate the graphic designer's professionalism. There is a stereotype of artists being unorganized and free spirited, but that's not what you want when you hire a graphic designer to work on your invitations. If you visit their office, look around carefully at the surroundings. Is the office well-organized? Does the designer appear to know where things are? Or is everything just stacked on the desks and spread out everywhere with no real organization?

You also want a graphic designer who knows how to behave like a business person. That means he or she uses a written contract, keeps customer files organized, answers email and phone calls promptly or returns messages in a timely fashion, treats you respectfully, etc. If you're not convinced of his or her professionalism after the meeting, do not use him or her for your invitations.

Third, after you have spent some time with the graphic designer, ask yourself how comfortable you would be working with that individual. Throughout the process, you'll be working closely with this person. If you don't feel comfortable and if you don't feel as if you could freely communicate ideas or criticism with him or her, then choose someone else. These aspects are just too important to ignore – no matter how affordable or talented the designer is.

Check out the Contract

Finally, you need to look at the details of the contract. Price is probably going to be a major factor, but it shouldn't be the deciding factor. If you choose based on cheapness alone, you shouldn't be surprised when the results are disappointing. You do get what you pay for.

Besides price, you should also pay attention to guarantees and refunds. If a mistake is made or if you're not happy with the results, will the graphic designer make changes so you'll be satisfied? Will these changes cost extra? These are questions which need to be addressed within the written contract.

Remember you should never settle for the first graphic designer you meet. Interview at least three and if you can interview more that's even better. Your wedding invitations are special and taking your time will help you choose a graphic designer you'll be happy with.
