The Wild West was an era in American history that represented everything the nation stood for: open space, hard work, and the possibility of improving one’s station in life. After all, with millions of acres of land to settle, there was certainly enough to dole out significant amounts to each new settler. Indeed, various Acts of Congress throughout the 19th century created “homesteads”, entitling each family moving out west to 160 acres of land to call their own. This plot was free; all they had to do was work it for five years, and it was theirs for the keeping.
Of course, it didn’t quite work out that way all the time. The Wild West was a place of danger and excitement, and in many parts there were often fierce battles between settlers and Native Americans. The school play that shows “Pilgrims” and “Indians” sitting down to a nice Thanksgiving meal is really an oversimplification of the way things really went down in the West. How deep you want to explore this interesting time period is a choice you can make for your wedding. Feel free to either embrace or distance yourself from the darker side of things-after all, it’s your wedding!
One of the most storied aspects of Western history is the role of the gun-slinging cowboy. Alternatively robbing banks or protecting innocent women and children, cowboys were always on the fringe of society, waiting to ride off on their horse into the sunset. Perhaps that explains why these mythical creatures are now so deeply embedded in the psyche of the average American. Added to your invitation, these can make for a fun and exciting image.
So what does this all mean for your special day? Well, if you’re truly the adventurous type, you’ll consider having a Western Wedding of your own! Chances are your guests attend the same old weddings year after year. That means they’ll appreciate you going out of your way to make your wedding different! Add some exciting new elements, like cowboy hats and plastic guns. The only limit is your imagination!
The perfect time to kick off your Western Wedding is during the invitation decision-making process. After all, wedding invitations generally set the tone for the whole affair, so you want to make sure that you choose stationery that accurately reflects exactly what you’re trying to go for with the theme of the wedding. One of the best colors you can pick is white (or an offshoot like cream or beige). Besides being a favorite that easily transcends the generational gap, white wedding invitations tie back to your Western Wedding. One of the most powerful symbols from the Wild West is the (white) covered wagon.
Play around with different symbols. Perhaps you would like to create a montage, with various Wild West icons (think cowboys, gunslingers, Native Americans) dancing around the invitation. However you choose to go about creating your special stationery, you’ll love the uniqueness that comes out of a Western Wedding.
