Incorporating Humor into Wedding Invitations

Weddings are sometimes thought to be very serious events. In fact, couples often take themselves so seriously and become so upset by the smallest details that they can lose sight of the importance of the ceremony itself. However, there are no etiquette rules saying you can’t have a sense of humor about your wedding. After all, a good sense of humor is going to be a tremendous asset during all those years after your wedding.

Finding ways to infuse your wedding with a few chuckles really starts with your invitations. Remember your wedding invitations set the tone and mood for the rest of your wedding. If they’re light-hearted and fun, then that’s exactly what your guests are going to expect from the rest of your ceremony and reception.

Using Funny Images in Your Wedding Invitations

One way to add humor to your wedding invitations is by hiring an artist to create a caricature of the two of you. Caricatures are actually your pictures but with exaggerated features, such as large heads and eyes. You can either have yourself drawn in your wedding apparel or have the caricature be based on your engagement photograph.

Another idea would be to hire an amateur cartoonist to create a funny two- to four-panel cartoon on your invitations. The cartoon could feature the two of you or your families as characters and could poke fun at almost any part of your relationship, your future together, or the wedding planning process.

Using Funny Words in Your Wedding Invitations

Of course you don’t have to rely on graphics for humor. Why not add jokes instead? In addition to the usual wedding details, such as place and time, you could also throw in some jokes. The Internet is full of funny, cynical witticisms about marriage that could be included in your invitation. In fact, both the bride and the groom could pick their own jokes. You don’t necessarily have to search the Internet for jokes either. If you have a good sense of humor and a knack for comedy writing then you might be able to create a few of your own, maybe a top ten list of ways you can spot a newly married couple or a wedding guest.

If you don’t want to use jokes, why not incorporate famous and funny quotes and sayings about weddings, marriage, sex, men, or women into your invitation. These tried and true classics are sure to generate a few laughs and smiles from your guests.

Humor: Not Just for Your Invitations

Here’s the thing though: if you add humor to your wedding invitations, then your actual wedding needs to have some humor in it, too. Your wedding speeches are a great place to add humor and a way to lighten the mood. Just keep in mind that the best humor comes naturally. You don’t have to force it.

Other humor ideas for your wedding might include sharing funny stories about how you met in the wedding program, playing a montage of funny romantic comedy scenes at your wedding (keep the scenes very short so you don’t violate copyright laws though), or hire a stand up comedian as your reception entertainment. By adding humor to your wedding and your invitations, you’ll definitely create a memorable impression on your guests.
