The perfect wedding invitation made especially for your wedding is within your grasp! Using these guidelines, you can make your own wedding invitations and infuse them with your modern flair.
There are practical reasons to make your own wedding invitations, with budget restraints being at the top of the list. If you think you won’t have time to make your own wedding invitations, think again. You’ll avoid spending countless hours on the internet and at various stationery stores flipping through dozens of wedding invitation samples only to find the ones you want are too expensive. Instead, you will decide whether you need formal or casual wedding invitations and proceed from there.
Once you decide upon your wedding’s formality, you need to decide if you want a theme and what your signature colors and flower will be. Then decide what type of wedding invitation you want to create. Craft stores and office supply stores carry printer-friendly paper in a wide variety of colors, textures, patterns, and weight. You will find blank bi-fold and tri-fold paper, as well as 8.5” by 11” cardstock and decorative paper. This paper is usually made to suit a common word processing program like Microsoft Word.
Once you have your paper chosen, consider any embellishments you might want to add. These could be pressed flowers, ribbon, beads, sequins, or a theme-related object like a seashell for a beach theme.
One of the easiest DIY formats is the single pane wedding invitation, where the wedding invitation is printed on a single sheet. You can embellish this with a vellum overlay attached by a ribbon, or print your wedding invitation on a smaller rectangle or square, then glue it to a different color or patterned background cut slightly larger, with a 1” or 2” border.
For example, you might want a spring theme for a May wedding and choose floral patterned cardstock and a solid color from the pattern, perhaps light pink. Choose a legible font and print your wedding invitation onto the pink cardstock or vellum, then center and glue it to the floral background, leaving a 1” border. You could also punch two holes at the top and thread a darker pink ribbon through both layers as a colorful decoration.
Another easy option for single pane wedding invitations is to punch a hole in each corner and create a ribbon border, tying it in the top center with a decorative knot or bow. You could also choose bi-fold paper. For example, if you’re having a winter wedding, you might choose a light blue textured paper to glue to the cover. Then, carefully glue white fabric snowflakes (look in the scrapbook aisle) to imitate falling snow. You can print your wedding invitation onto light blue paper, as well and glue it to the inside, perhaps with a dusting of white glitter for some winter shimmer.
Your wedding invitations will look modern and professional if you take your time and create a sample. Your friends and family will be very impressed when they find out your wedding invitations are homemade, and you’ll have a keepsake you can treasure forever.
