Introduction to Unique Wedding Invitation Ideas

Wedding invitations are no longer restricted by tradition or limited to a few proper color choices and formats. Every wedding is a unique expression, so why not choose complimentary unique wedding invitations for your special day?

Vintage Style Wedding Invitations

Vintage Pattern

A unique wedding invitation could incorporate vintage elements, whether it’s a color scheme, pattern, or image. Your vintage wedding invitations could be tea-stained to appear aged and feature a Parisian soap label, swirl or damask pattern at the top of the invitation. If you’re wearing a wedding gown with a vintage pattern, such as a ring of rosettes or a vintage lace pattern, transfer it onto your wedding invitation.

You could send photo wedding invitations, asking your photographer to take your photo in a natural or urban setting, whatever suits your wedding style. Instead of smiling into the camera, make the photo a bit abstract, perhaps gazing at a mountain vista or pondering an outdoor sculpture. Then, have the photo printed in sepia to finish the vintage feel.

Unique Wedding Invitation Construction

If you want less fussy wedding invitations, some stationers will attach response postcards to the wedding invitation with perforated edges. This way, guests simply fill out the response postcard, detach, and mail it without possibly mislaying a separate card and envelope.

Another aspect of your wedding invitations not to be overlooked is the outer envelope. Customize the envelopes with colorful liners that coordinate with your wedding invitations. This could be a pattern, such as mimicking the paisley from your wedding invitations, a metallic color like silver to match the silver lettering, or a solid color like light pink to match your wedding invitations featuring a light pink rose.

Finally, consider sending a pocket or bi-fold wedding invitation that not only provides a unique style, but functions to hold your enclosures in place. This is also an opportunity to introduce an accent color or pattern into your wedding invitation ensemble by making the pocket or outer folds of the wedding invitation different.

Unique Patterns for Wedding Invitations

If you love the idea of introducing a pattern into your wedding invitations, you will have many unique choices. For example, you might choose pinstripes instead of larger stripes, or combine vertical pinstripes with several thicker horizontal stripes. They can be alternating shades of your signature color, the same color, or multicolored. Other patterns could be a colorful paisley, polka dots, or a group of various colored shapes floating abstractly on the wedding invitation.

Unique Twist on Traditional Wedding Invitations

If you decide to go with a more traditional wedding invitation, you might consider an eco-friendly wedding invitation. Your choices aren’t as limited as you might imagine, and recycled, cotton, seed-embedded paper and wood veneers are all lovely choices. You might even use a soy-based ink as well.

Silhouettes let you take a traditional image and transform it into a subtle shadow of a design to give your wedding invitations unique elegance. The silhouette could be a bird on a flowering branch or a grove of trees, whatever speaks to your desires.

Whatever unique aspect of your personality or wedding you choose to highlight, don’t let the opportunity of choosing a unique wedding invitation pass you by.

Unique Wedding Invitations Using Ribbons

There is much more to ribbons then simply tying bows. Ribbons can be used in various ways to embellish unique wedding invitations, as well as give them an air of elegant sophistication.

Wedding Invites with Ribbon

Unique Wedding Invitations: Using Ribbons as Accents

Ribbons can transform an ordinary wedding invitation into a unique wedding invitation that feels elegant, playful, casual, or glamorous. It’s all in the ribbon and how you apply it to your unique wedding invitation. For example, you can use a thin ribbon, make small loops, and join the pieces together to create a rose for your unique wedding invitations. For a flower with a colored center, you can simply glue a bead, crystal or sequin to the middle of the completed flower.

A ribbon can also be threaded through your unique wedding invitations and set the tone. If you’re getting married on a boat and your wedding has a nautical theme, you might consider using navy blue and white striped ribbon threaded as a border around your unique wedding invitation. For a formal wedding, you could attach a silver bow to the top of your unique wedding invitations to give them a glamorous, elegant appearance.

Unique Wedding Invitations: Tying Ribbons

If you will be tying ribbons yourself, it is best to practice the technique. Usually, the ribbon comes precut, so you won’t have to worry about creating various sized bows. Your unique wedding invitation should also have pre-punched holes at the top to thread the ribbon through.

With the printed side facing you, thread each ribbon end through a hole, letting the ends trail on the back of your unique wedding invitation. Next, thread the right side back through the left hole, the end once again on the unique wedding invitation front. Do the same with the left side of the ribbon. Pull ends taut, then cross left over right, then under and tie. Next, form a loop with each end of the ribbon, tie them together, and pull through without twisting the ribbon, and you have a bow. Simply adjust each end so the loops are even and the center knot is tight.

Don’t forget to finish the ribbon ends. You could trim them at an angle to form two points, trim them into triangles, or cut an inverted “V” into the ends for a decorative finish to your unique wedding invitation embellishment.

Unique Wedding Invitations: Using Ribbons as Wraps

For a luxurious feel, consider wrapping your unique wedding invitations using a richly colored ribbon. This is a good time to enunciate an accent color, such as a deep purple, blue, red, or pink, by choosing your ribbon in a matching hue or a slightly lighter or darker shade.

A modern and unique wedding invitation could incorporate a crisp white ribbon to match white lettering. Reverse your invitation and choose a dark colored paper, like royal blue or dark magenta, and use white block lettering for a truly unique wedding invitation. Finishing off this look with a simple white bow attached at the top or threaded around the border will ensure your unique wedding invitation gets the attention it deserves.
