If you’re having a destination wedding, particularly in a tropical area, you may consider using nautical invitations, but that’s certainly not the only time you can use the theme in your invitations or in your entire wedding.

Reasons for a Nautical Theme

Some couples opt for a nautical theme if they are having a wedding near any type of water, including oceans, seas, rivers, even large lakes. If people can use the water source for swimming, fishing, boating, canoeing, or jet skiing, then it can be a great location for a wedding and can set the stage for a nautical wedding.

You don’t’ have to actually go anywhere on the boat though to have a great wedding or wedding reception on a sea faring vessel. Depending on where you live or where you want to get married, you may be able to rent a yacht or large boat for your service.

This may be a pricey option but considering the average cost of renting a church and/or a reception hall you probably wouldn’t have to extend your budget very much in order to do something a little unusual.

Nautical Themed Invitation Ideas

For this type of wedding, nautical invitations clearly make sense. You could choose invitations including pictures of boats or of nautical steering wheels. You could also use a photograph of the actual boat on which your event will be held. If you want to avoid boat pictures, why not pick ocean scenes or a beautiful lighthouse as the focal point of your invitations.

You could also opt for a more subtle nautical theme that would be easier to work into the rest of your wedding plans, such as shells or seahorses. Decorating your invitations with these designs can be easy. You can either use small pictures of these items or you can find embellishments in these styles as well. Shell or seahorse holograms could be a nice touch, too.

Your decorative theme could be shells and seahorses, too. If you live near a beach, you could collect beautiful shells and use them to create centerpieces on the reception tables. You could buy a seahorse or shell stencil and paint those designs on all of your white cloth tablecloths. Your wedding cake can be decorated with shells and seahorses made of molded plastic or colored icing or you could buy molds and create chocolate lollipops made in those designs to place on your cake.

Another option if you are considering a nautical wedding theme is to book a cruise for your entire wedding party and guests. Obviously, this is going to be beyond the budgets of most couples but if you’ve been saving up for a huge wedding and you don’t mind renting a smaller cruise ship or possibly a large yacht, then this could be a setting for your nautical wedding.
