Couples are always looking for ways to make their wedding invitations something special. It only makes sense. This is your special day – a day you’ve been waiting for your entire life and that you’ve been planning for months – so you want your invitations to really make a statement for your recipients.
Although there are a number of ways you can create unique wedding invitations, such as making your own or using photographs, many couples don’t think about creating truly unique content for the invitations. Of course, you’ll still need to include the standard information – date, location, your names, etc. – but why not grab the recipient’s attention with your own original work of rhyming poetry.
Most of us weren’t born to be poets so coming up with an original verse may seem like a bigger challenge than negotiating a good deal on a five-tier wedding cake. But it always helps to look at some examples for inspiration and that’s why you’ll find a couple of samples below.
When we first met,
Neither was ready to take the next step.
But despite the many tribulations,
We gather here for our special celebration.
Today, in this house of God’s great glory
Our separate stories
Will become one
Which cannot be undone.
Bake the six-tiered cake
Avoid making a mess of that perfect dress
Hope for flowers undampened by showers.
Invite only the best guests
We have no room for the rest.
On this date don’t be late
We want no delay on our special day.
Because under the watchful eyes of God above
Today, we’ll proclaim our undying love.
The two examples above also illustrate two separate ways of adding rhyme. You can have the lines rhyme at the end or you can add rhyming words within each line.
The best way to start is to just play around with the language. Think of pairs of words that rhyme and jot them down. You can always build the sentences and the message around those word pairs. Remember to be creative and keep an open mind. You may not like many of your early drafts, but if you keep experimenting you’re definitely going to find something you are happy to print on your wedding invitations (see our wedding poems: I, II, III, and IV).
Of course, you have other options. If you don’t want to write your own poem, you could hire a freelance poet to create one for you or you can find a favorite poem to add to the invitations (be sure to credit the author, however).
