Travel Themes for Wedding Invitations & Other Parties

Whether you’re throwing a bon voyage party or celebrating a wedding, choosing a travel theme could be a great idea. Before you start planning, however, you should decide whether you want the celebration’s theme to be travel in general or travel to a specific part of the world. After you make that decision, you can start making arrangements.

Travel Theme Wedding Invitations

Fortunately, plenty of travel-themed wedding invitations are available on the market for you to choose from. A friend of mine, for example, threw her teenage daughter a bon voyage party before she left on a summer trip to France, Spain, and Morocco. For the invitations, she decided to pay homage to all three of those destinations by purchasing Moroccan Mystery, Parisian Style, and Barcelona invitations. Each guest received one of the three different styles.

If you’re having a more general travel theme at your wedding reception, for instance, then you might prefer the Around the World invitations or the International Flags invitations. You’ll find numerous options for other types of travel as well, including Asian holidays and cruises.

Incorporating the Travel Theme

One way to incorporate the travel theme in your party decorations is to use passport photos of your guests for their place settings. This works especially well with small parties because you can ask your guests to provide their photos in advance.

Another idea is to purchase globes as decorations for at least some of the tables. Globes can get a bit pricey so let your budget decide whether each table or only the main table includes one as a decoration. You can sometimes find smaller globes that might be ideal for wedding favors. If you’re looking for something more interesting for a wedding favor, have a raffle. Give each guest a raffle ticket and at the end of the night have a drawing for a pair of tickets to travel somewhere. Again, your budget will decide how much you can spend on the trip – you can use the money set aside for wedding favors to cover the cost.

For wall decorations, you can purchase a number of large foldable maps. Unfold them and hang them on the walls using clear push pins or tacks. You can choose maps of large areas – continents or the world – or of smaller places – individual cities, for example.

If you really want to take the travel theme through your entire celebration, then consider having an international menu for your refreshments. Platters of sushi or warm Naan (a traditional Indian flatbread) are two ideas. With a little research and imagination, you can make your guests feel as if they are taking a wonderful trip.
