Wedding Invitation Cartoons and Caricature Drawings
When you think of wedding invitations, the first thing that comes to mind is probably a very formal card in a neutral color with a message written in a very elegant script. You probably never imagined having a cartoon version of yourselves or of other characters displayed on the front of your invitation, but that’s an option many couples with a sense of humor are considering as they try to find something fresh and unique to set their invitations apart.
One idea is to decorate the front of your invitation with cartoon characters. Perhaps you and your future spouse have two favorite characters who could be drawn on the front of your invitation in full wedding apparel to represent the two of you. Or you might want to have a favorite animal drawn in cartoon-form of the invitation. You could also include a four-panel cartoon, such as those in the newspaper, about your wedding on the front or have the entire wedding invitation created to resemble a traditional Japanese manga (comic).
Any of the ideas above could be created if you hire the right artist. You should search around locally for artists; perhaps consider visiting art fairs and other exhibits to meet people who have the talent you’re looking for. If you can’t find anyone in your area to do the work, the Internet has a wealth of talent available and eager to showcase their talent. The only limitation you’re likely to encounter is that because of copyright laws some cartoon characters may not be able to be drawn without permission from the copyright holder. If you have your heart set on one of those cartoon characters, you may have to search for pre-made invitations including the character.
If cartoon animals and comics aren’t exactly right for your personalities, you could also consider having your invitations decorated with a caricature of the two of you on the front. If you’re unfamiliar with caricature, these are pictures drawn to resemble real people but they are often exaggerated to get a laugh. For example, the heads are often quite large and sometimes other features are distorted, too. (See Incorporating Humor into Your Wedding Invitations)
Many cities have caricature artists who work in malls or other popular tourist attractions who do these drawings for a living. You can also find the artists online in many places. To create the drawing, you’d either have to appear for a setting or submit a photograph of the two of you. Many of the artists will let you decide on a background, such as a beach if you’re having a destination wedding.
With the finished drawing done, you could take it to the printer and have it placed on all of your invitations. In fact, some caricature artists may even handle this part themselves. You might even want a larger version of the picture to be framed and proudly displayed at your reception.
Any of these ideas would be perfect for couples who don’t mind injecting a little humor into what are sometimes overly serious occasions. But remember if you’re having a formal wedding, your invitations need to reflect that. However, you might still be able to add some cartoons or caricatures to your thank you cards.
