As you are starting your search for the perfect wedding invitations, you must remember to make a selection that will complement the theme of your wedding. More and more couples are choosing a main theme that will run through both the ceremony and the reception, which will influence the attire you choose, the wedding favors you give away, even the food you serve. And, of course, it should influence the invitations you select.
One of the most common themes are colors. Couples usually select one or two colors for the flowers, decorations, wedding attire, etc. In fact, you can choose these colors and still have a second theme running through the course of your wedding if you desire.
Another common theme are the seasons. For example, if you are getting married in the fall, you might choose colors that reflect the changing shades of the leaves, you might have pumpkins or gourds as decorations, and you might serve fall foods such as pumpkin pie or squash.
Along the same line as seasons, you could also select a Winter Holiday theme. In fact, if you really wanted to be creative you could choose a holiday that is no where near your wedding date – maybe a Christmas wedding in June motif. Of course, such a theme would require quite a bit of pre-planning.
Besides those basic themes, you can literally choose almost anything that interests you. For example, if you both love nature, then choose that as your theme. You could have an outdoor ceremony or reception, for example. If you both love dogs, then you could invite guests' pets to the reception and serve both human and animal foods.
If you're working with a wedding planner, he or she should be able to help you brainstorm some possibilities and coordinate your theme. If not, try to be creative and to think outside the box.
Besides simply asking people to attend your wedding, invitations are meant to introduce the tone of your event. That's why it's so important for you to pick invitations that reflect your wedding's theme.
If you're sticking with a traditional color theme, for example, you might pick paper, envelopes, ribbon, even ink that reflects those colors (depending on the formality of your wedding). That's a pretty straightforward choice.
However, if you prefer some other type of theme, you might want to be more creative. For example, if you're have a fall theme, you could choose invitations shaped like pumpkins or like leaves. If you're having a Christmas theme, then you could send invitations shaped like snowflakes, decorated with Santa Clauses or reindeer, or invitations which resemble small presents instead of cards.
For a nature theme, you might pick recycled paper or paper that contains seeds. Instead of ribbon, you might use foliage or dried flowers to decorate the invitation. If you wanted to invite pets to your wedding, then you might send invitations shaped like dogs or showing off a picture of your dogs. You might also want to send separate invitations: one to the pets and one to the humans.
Although, there's no way to cover all of the possible ideas you might consider for your invitations, hopefully these ideas will start you thinking creatively.
