Hot Trends in Wedding Invitations: The Deckle Edge

Wedding invitations are subject to trends and one of the most popular trends this year are deckle edging. If you’re like most people, the term deckle edge doesn’t mean much to you, but it does create a unique and elegant look that brides and grooms are flocking to for their stationery.

What is Deckle Edge?

In printer lingo, a deckle edge is a rugged side of the paper. It’s also known as the feather edge. Early printers didn’t like the deckle edge look and would usually trim it off to create a smoother look to the paper. During the 1800’s, however, people thought the deckle edge was charming so books often were printed on paper with rough edges. Then it went out of style again. Now it’s back in vogue but for wedding stationery instead of printed books.

Most of the deckle edges you’ll find today aren’t a product of normal paper-making processes. They are deliberately added to create a new look for the paper.

Deckle Edge Wedding Invitations

Deckle edges look best, perhaps, when they are colored to stand out from the rest of the paper. In this way, they can provide an elegant blast of color without dominating the entire piece of stationery. When paired with envelopes that use the same color as an inner accent, the harmony looks very nice and works well for formal, semiformal, and even casual weddings. Some of the most popular deckle edge invitation colors include blue, brown, red, and black.

Of course, you don’t have to use deckle edged stationery simply for wedding invitations.  If you’re celebrating your 25th or 50th wedding anniversary or renewing your vows, then you can choose a silver edge or a gold edge card for your invitations. The color is a subtle way of staying in theme.

Although the deckle edge invitation is a hot wedding trend, you don’t have to worry about your invitations not looking unique. Because the invitations come in many different colors and because you can easily add your own touches, such as ribbons or other embellishments, to dress them up. You could also choose an ink that matches the color of the edging to create a more unified color statement on your invitations.
