Should My Wedding Invitations Include Photographs?

One of the latest trends in wedding invitations are the photo-invitations. This style of invitation includes photographs of the couple, along with the rest of the necessary information. The photographs are usually similar in style to those found in engagement announcements, but couples generally have the freedom to pick and choose their own favorite photographs for the invitations.

Let's look at a few reasons why you might want to choose this style of wedding invitation:

  • Uniqueness – Because you can choose your photographs, your wedding invitations will be completely unique and unlike anyone else's invitations.
  • Makes a Nice Keepsake – With the photographs, the wedding invitation becomes not only a memory of your wedding day but also of what you and your spouse looked like as an engaged couple. It's also nice for invited guests who live far away and who may not be able to attend the ceremony.
  • Lots of Choices Available – Because this is the latest trend, dozens of online sites have sprung up offering photo wedding invitations in an array of designs and styles. That gives you lots of options to choose from.
Wedding Invitations

So there are some reasons to consider this style of wedding invitation, but there are some other reasons why uou might want something more traditional:

  • Formal Weddings Require Formal Invitations – Photo invitations tend to look informal and might be an acceptable option if you're having an informal wedding, but their style and tone just do not work well for semi-formal or formal weddings. In those cases, you need to stick close to tradition. If you want to incorporate photographs into your wedding stationery, include a wedding picture on your thank you cards.
  • Cost – While you expect to pay a little more for high quality paper and elegant printing, many photo invitations cost more but do not include high quality materials. Plus, you'll have to pay for the photographs to be taken in the first place. You'll also need permission from the photographer to use the photos for the cards.
  • Harder to Make Yourself – Many couples choose to make their own invitations either because they want something custom and unique or because they want to save money. In either case, photographs are going to be difficult to add. If you're printing with a standard laser or inkjet printer on card stock paper, the quality of the picture just isn't going to be that good.
  • Too Trendy – Weddings, like most of our culture, are influenced by trends. Fads come and go all the time. The question is do you want your wedding invitation to be part of a passing trend or do you want it to have the classic beauty of a traditional invitation which has been the standard for decades? While a photo invitation may seem cool and fun now, you may not feel that way a few years down the road.

While there are good and bad reasons to choose photo wedding invitations, the choice is really up to you and depends on how you want your wedding to be remembered and thought of by guests today and in the future. A photo invitation may be the hottest trend today, but traditional invitations will remain the favorite of brides for years to come.
