Winter Wedding Invitations

When we think of winter, we usually think of snow, Christmas, cold weather, but we don't usually think of weddings. That's a shame because winter weddings can be very beautiful and, because it's the off-season, you'll have a better chance of booking the locations you want and on saving money with your vendors. It's a win-win situation. Let's look at some winter wedding planning ideas.

Invitations for Winter Weddings

For some reason, winter seems the perfect time for a formal or very formal wedding. Perhaps it's because the warmth of those formal clothes won't be so bad in the frigid weather. Whatever the reason, this is a good season for sticking with traditional invitations: creamy white or off-white paper with fancy scripts and black ink, etc.

If you want something a little different, you might change the paper color to an ice blue shade or if you're making your own invitations add a few touches of glitter around the borders or use watercolor paint to draw snowflakes on the invitations. Blue and silver or red and green make lovely color combinations for this time of year.

Of course, you could also have your invitations designed to look like snowflakes or include small amounts of snowflake-shaped confetti in each envelope.

Winter Wedding Ideas

Outdoor weddings are definitely out during this season unless you are going to get married while you're skiing or you are having a destination wedding some place tropical. When you choose a location, look for something cozy with lots of dark wood and maybe a fireplace. These elements will make everything feel warmer.

Your wedding dress should be made of heavier fabric, such as velvet. Look for dresses with sleeves, if possible, but if you can't find one then invest in warm wraps for the bride and her attendants. You'll find a few flowers, such as chrysanthemums and poinsettias, in season. These flowers can make lovely decorations and bouquets, especially when added with roses or daisies.

For your reception, make sure to serve hearty foods. Ham and roast beef are good choices if you're having a buffet. You should also serve coffee and/or hot chocolate to your guests before the reception begins instead of cocktails, especially if they've had to drive from the ceremony site to the reception hall.

Decorations

As for decorations, the snowflake motif is a good choice. You could hang them from the ceiling and the chairs. You could even have small snowflakes decorating your wedding cake. Because of the cold weather, winter wedding receptions are ideal for ice sculptures. These sculptures can be of anything you want: wedding bells, a snowflake, a Christmas tree, something related to your interests, etc. (Read our article: Christmas Symbols and Their Meanings)

Another idea is to purchase snow globes as centerpieces. At some online stores, you can even find snow globes that let you add your own photos or other items to them so they're personalized. Smaller versions might make nice wedding favors, as would coffee mugs containing packets of freshly ground coffee and peppermints wrapped in tulle.
